Which CBD Oils are the best for Massage Therapy? | River Organics

As we explored in an earlier article, massage therapy is an incredible tool that offers a host of powerful health and wellness benefits including improving circulation, helping to reduce depression and anxiety, promoting better sleep as well as helping with stress, tension, and pain relief.

If you’ve ever enjoyed a really good massage, you are probably familiar with the amazing, feel-good sensations and total relaxation that it can induce.

So, what could make massage even better?

Two words: CBD oil.

Today, we wanted to take a closer look at massage therapy as a remedy to help alleviate pain, as well as the benefits CBD offers to elevate the overall effects of massage therapy to new heights of health and wellness.

How Does Massage Therapy Help Alleviate Soreness and Pain?

As a practice that applies pressures to the skin through different types of rubbing, kneading and pressing techniques, it only makes sense that massage therapy would offer incredible value as an agent to help relieve pain and tension in the body. Studies have shown that massage offers benefits towards pain relief particularly due to its helping induce the production of oxytocin in the body. Oxytocin is a natural pain- relieving chemical that helps soothe and relax the body, while easing pain within sore muscles and joints. A well-executed massage can also significantly increase blood flow in sore, stiff joints and muscles to further promote enhanced pain relief as well as help with muscle healing.

What Benefits Does CBD Oil Bring to Massage?

While there is ongoing research to study the benefits that CBD can bring to massage, it seems that CBD can help augment the overall positive health and wellness benefits of massage therapy. While helping to reduce friction on the skin, a CBD topical also helps improve muscle tone and boost moisture levels in the skin, as well as helps promote deep relaxation to soothe soreness and tension in the body.

When applied topically during a massage, CBD oil is absorbed in the skin, where it circulates into the bloodstream to eventually interact with our body’s cannabinoid receptors as part of the endocannabinoid system. In combination with the host of benefits massage therapy brings, CBD oil offers its own abundance of physical effects, augmenting the overall positive impact of massage therapy, including such benefits as:

  • Enhancing pain relief
  • Alleviating inflammation to calm sore muscles and joints
  • Improving blood pressure
  • Aiding in muscle recovery
  • Relieving headaches
  • Decreasing tension and stiffness in the fascia/soft tissue
  • Improving digestion and function of the GI tract

In addition to its tremendous positive impact on our physical health, CBD used in conjunction with massage enhances the already relaxing effects of massage therapy, helping to foster improved mental health. It offers such benefits as:

  • Promoting relaxation
  • Relieving stress
  • Reducing anxiety
  • Calming the mind

What Types of CBD Oils Should You Use for Massage Therapy?

When it comes to finding the best CBD oils to use for massage, it’s important to keep in mind that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not currently regulate CBD products, and therefore, not all CBD products are mandated to meet the same standard of safety and quality.

A quick Google search of "CBD Massage Oils" will turn up an endless array of products, and sifting through them can be very overwhelming.

When shopping for a CBD oil for massage, you should ensure that your CBD products meets the following:

  • Made from high-quality, organic hemp grown in the US
  • Made by a company that provides proof of third-party testing
  • Contains no more than 0.3 percent THC, according to third party testing and a COA (certificate of analysis)
  • Is free of pesticides, heavy metals and molds, according to the COA

You may also want to consider:

  • The company’s certifications and manufacturing processes
  • Product potency to ensure absorption of CBD.  More potent topical products may be more effective than less potent ones.
  • Does the product contain any additional ingredients that may support pain relief or relaxation?
  • Are the ingredients certified USDA organic?

Full-spectrum CBD (also known as whole plant extract) may have some advantages over CBD isolate. Whole plant extract is believed to work better / more synergistically together than the individual components of the plant would alone — this is referred to as the entourage effect.

How Do You Use CBD Oil for Massage Therapy?

You can use CBD oil on its own or in combination with traditional massage oil. Often, it is used for a full body massage to promote enhanced physical and mental wellness and wellbeing. However, if you are suffering from acute or chronic pain in a particular area, CBD oil can be very beneficial when it is applied to the targeted area, where it can avitave receptors in the skin and surrounding tissues to alleviate pain and soreness as well as offer relief from inflammation.

Cannabinoids naturally have low permeability, meaning they don’t absorb especially well through skin. That’s why choosing a potent product, like ours, can be particularly helpful when it comes to topicals.  When combined with carrier or essential oils that are able to permeate the skin layers and into the tissues below, the CBD is able to penetrate into deeper muscle layers, optimizing its benefit to the body.  This is why we add jojoba oil to our topical oils, as it has remarkably similar properties to our skin's own sebum and is able to penetrate deeply, reaching below the top layer of the skin.

River Organics’ massage oil features a combination of plant-based oils, including coconut oil with powerful antimicrobial properties and hemp seed and jojoba, which help to nourish and hydrate the skin, while alleviating soreness and tight muscles.. Peppermint and tea tree add a refreshing and invigorating aroma with a soothing effect on the skin, while helping to reduce overall inflammation.

We are so excited to announce the launch of our newest topical CBD oil, an Extra Strength Pain Relief Oil, with the addition of arnica, for more potent, targeted relief and your ultimate answer for pain, tension and soreness.
