Full-Spectrum versus Broad-Spectrum CBD | River Organics

Navigating the CBD marketplace can be very confusing. It can be hard to know where exactly your CBD came from, whether it will work for your needs, if it was made organically, etc., and it can be challenging to understand what you’re even getting in a CBD product and its contents. As you have researched CBD products, you may have come across the terms: full-spectrum, broad-spectrum and isolate...and were probably muddled as to what they meant.

So, River Organics is here to help clear up the confusion! We discussed the differences between CBD and hemp oil in a previous article. (That’s a whole other story, but check it out to make sure your product isn’t masquerading as CBD when it only contains hemp seed oil.)

Today, we’re going to dive into the nitty gritty of full-spectrum vs broad-spectrum and CBD isolate, and later explain why River Organics is proud to offer full-spectrum CBD products.

First of all, understand that different CBD products have different properties, and some may be more suitable for your needs over other ones. We hope you can use this guide to help you determine which CBD product will be best for you.

CBD Isolate

CBD Isolate sounds like what it is for the most part. You can think of CBD isolate as CBD isolated from its other components. Therefore, CBD isolate is composed purely of CBD and does not contain other cannabinoids or THC. In fact, CBD isolate is so pure, it contains 99% CBD. It is available in a crystalline solid or powder form.

If you’re a CBD newbie and are looking for a CBD product with strictly CBD and nothing else, then CBD isolate could be right for you.

Benefits of CBD Isolate

  • As CBD isolate does not contain THC, there are no concerns about any THC entering your system or it appearing on a blood test. It is important to note that while River Organics’ CBD products are full-spectrum, our products contain well under the legally required .3% level of THC.
  • As CBD isolate contains only CBD, other additives that may be present in full spectrum or broad spectrum CBD products are filtered from and therefore, not present in CBD isolate.
  • As CBD isolate comes in a solid form, it offers multiple options for consumption ( can be added to drinks or mixed with food), and may be easier to dose and measure exact quantities of.

Broad-Spectrum CBD

Broad-spectrum CBD again sounds like what it is, containing a broader spectrum of components. Broad-spectrum CBD is composed of various cannabinoids besides CBD (cannabidiol) including cannabichromene, cannabinol and terpenes such as myrcene, limonene. While it does contain a range of cannabinoids, broad-spectrum CBD typically does not contain THC. However, trace amounts of THC may be present in some broad-spectrum CBD products.

Benefits of Broad-Spectrum CBD

  • According to sources, due to the entourage effect created by the other cannabinoids present in it (we will get more into the entourage effect later) broad-spectrum CBD can help promote a positive mood, and sense of well-being as well as relieve stress, and may help with other concerns.

There is a growing market for entirely THC-free CBD products (these products would still contain a range of other cannabinoids to produce a healing, entourage effect without containing any trace amounts of THC). We are currently working on organic methods of removing all THC from our CBD extracts we harvest from our hemp plants.

River Organics was recently featured in MJBizDaily to express our thoughts about how to produce healthy, organic and THC-free CBD. According to operations manager Ryan Cross, we want to be able to “provide our customers with products that meet either their personal beliefs around THC, or their job requirements just don’t make it compatible.”

We understand that THC-free products may be more suitable to some of our customers and if that is something you are looking for in your CBD products, we aim to provide that to cater to your needs for this in the near future.

Full-Spectrum CBD

Full-spectrum CBD is most often preferred over CBD isolate and broad-spectrum CBD due to its composition which, like broad-spectrum, contains several kinds of cannabinoids and terpenes, including cannabichromene, cannabinol and terpenes such as myrcene, limonene, as well as up to no more than the maximum amount of 0.3% THC. Full-spectrum is usually considered to be more effective when compared to other forms of CBD, due to the presence of this tiny amount of THC, which enhances and creates a greater entourage effect than that which is seen with broad-spectrum CBD.

You can think of it as the best of both worlds  — Full-spectrum CBD contains therapeutic cannabinoids, as well as a small amount of THC, (well below the maximum of 0.3% allowed by federal law)  to help enhance your overall wellness.

Benefits of Full-Spectrum CBD

  • Preferred for its more pronounced entourage effect, its higher efficacy and healing benefits, as well as its ability to provide a sense of well-being and calm, and relieve stress, anxiety and tension.

The entourage effect is a theory that suggests when you use the whole cannabis plant, and you extract the CBD along with all the other naturally occurring cannabinoids and terpenes from the hemp plant, it creates an ‘entourage effect’, which yields stronger therapeutic benefits. In other words, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

  • No need to worry about psychoactive effects as the trace amounts of THC (less than 0.3%) it may contain are not enough to make you high.

At River Organics, it is our mission to contribute to the overall health of our nearby ecosystems, our community —— referring to you, our customers as well as the planet as a whole. That is why we proudly offer full-spectrum CBD products, made entirely organically, sustainably, responsibly, and ethically at our family-owned farm here in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. All of our CBD products contain well under the legally mandated 0.3% of THC, so you can enjoy their therapeutic benefits without having any concerns about psychoactive side effects.
