CBD Myths Busted

As CBD grows in popularity, it continues to attract attention from the general public, scientific communities, and healthcare organizations. An ever-growing body of research suggests that CBD may help treat various medical conditions, such as anxiety, inflammatory diseases, and chronic pain.

But with all of this attention, comes a lot of rumors as well.

So, we thought we would take the time to dispel these myths once and for all!

Can CBD Make You High?

CBD can be extracted from hemp (Cannabis Sativa) or marijuana (Cannabis) plants, but the CBD from either plant does not have psychoactive effects.  Although CBD comes from Cannabis plants, it does not produce the same euphoric intoxication as THC.  Only THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) extracted from marijuana plants will make you high.

There are very big differences between the two strains of Cannabis. Full-spectrum CBD is extracted from industrial hemp (Sativa) plants, which have high levels of CBD and virtually no THC.  Conversely, THC levels large enough to produce a high are found in the marijuana strain, which contains very little CBD.

For a plant to be considered “hemp,” it must contain less than 0.3% THC, as required by law.  Some full-spectrum CBD products contain trace amounts of THC, but this small amount is not enough to make someone feel high.  CBD contains a natural cannabinoid called Anandamide which helps you feel good without feeling high.

Note:  Some CBD companies have found ways to isolate that tiny amount of THC and sell products known as Delta-8 or Delta-10.  These products can make you high, so beware.  River Organics does not sell any of these Delta-8 or 10 products.

Is CBD Addictive?

The World Health Organization studied the potential for addiction with CBD and concluded “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential.”*

Why?  With drugs and caffeine that give you a “high,” your body releases dopamine and makes you want more.  CBD has feel-good endocannabinoids like Anandamide, but does not trigger dopamine.

CBD creates a sensation similar to the feeling you get when you see an old friend or receive a hug, or a runner’s high that you get after exercising.   Now those are the types of things many of us would like to get addicted to!

So, you can rest assured, CBD is considered generally safe to use, and will not create addictions or dependencies.

Does CBD Make You Sleepy?

In the last decade, growing interest in the health benefits of CBD has encouraged many researchers and scientists to study its effects. Several of these studies indicate that CBD may help support sleep.  It would be fair to assume that CBD delivers a sedative effect similar to what some experience with THC use; however, CBD does not make you sleepy, even though it may help you battle sleep disorders. This is because of the unique way in which CBD seems to alleviate symptoms of insomnia

CBD may help you sleep in two different ways. First, CBD appears to directly interact with the receptors in your brain that dictate your body’s wake and sleep cycle. And second, CBD may help alleviate pain and stress, two factors that often keep us up at night.**

In many cases, sleep cycle issues are a result of stress-related disorders. CBD has been associated with helping patients with PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other stress disorders. Pain can also contribute to sleeplessness, and CBD may help reduce inflammation to deliver pain relief, which could help users sleep better.

For those new to CBD, we recommend taking the tinctures in the evening before bed, in case you have any effects of drowsiness. Also, consider starting with a smaller dose, to see how your body responds.   Most people will not have to worry about this, but you may have to experiment to find the right dose for you.

IS CBD Illegal?

No, CBD is not illegal, although the industry, overall, is largely unregulated. This means that CBD growers are not bound to meeting specific standards and are free to use any methods, materials, pesticides or herbicides, etc. in the production of hemp and the extraction of its components. This is why it is so crucial to choose only organic CBD, which does meet strict standards of not containing any herbicides, pesticides or other toxic substances.

What is regulated is the amount of THC which CBD is legally allowed to contain. CBD producers are mandated by law to keep THC levels under 0.3%. It is advised that you check the laws and guidelines in your state to fully understand the legality and regulatory framework of CBD where you live.

Does CBD produce the same effects in everyone?

No, CBD will not produce the same exact effects in everyone. Yes, CBD has the potential to act as an incredible holistic remedy to enhance overall health and wellness and aid in alleviating a host of health issues, but the answer to this question is complicated.  Everyone has different body types, and how much CBD you need, and how fast you feel the effects, is directly related to your weight and metabolism. Gender plays a role as well. In general, women don’t need as much CBD as men do to feel its effects.

The quality and potency of your CBD products will have a large impact on how quickly and powerfully the effects are felt. How you consume your CBD matters as well. Rubbing a CBD topical on your muscles will provide targeted pain relief, but taking a tincture under the tongue may support your sleep, boost creativity, or offer a calming effect.

Keep in mind that high quality, full spectrum CBD products that contain many of the other therapeutic plant compounds will virtually always have greater effects than those that contain CBD alone.

And finally, you may need to experiment a bit before finding your optimal product type and dosage to create the effects that you are looking for.
